Hey all,

With a project like Genesis, it's really easy for us to get sidetracked and find ourselves discussing things that are not only difficult, but problem-spawning.

I discussed it with Gavan, and we believe the best course of action for reproduction is to have the couple simply Pray for a child.

Now, this also means we're going to implement a Praying mechanic. In short, the player selects an option to constantly Pray for. Whether it be a bonus to overall strength, or rate of learning a new skill.

Anyway, this removes the whole pregnancy thing, the graphic sex issue, and allows for Titans to breed with Cherubs.

Heh, makes me think a bit of black and white where the villagers would pray for more children (among other things).

I'm not sure that prayer would be what you'd call a mechanic that happens all the time. For prayer to be meaningful to a god time has to be dedicated solely to it, so I'd discourage it from being a thing in which points are constantly gained. Maybe something that happens when resting online, or perhaps different rates depending on your activity level, to avoid people leaving there character praying all day and coming back at the end of it to 20 starving children and a pet hamster. Thus cleric types have more of a purpose. They could have an accellerated rate of gain from praying, so people would go to them to request a child or boon from a god and give something in return.

Oh, praying definately wouldn't work like that. But I do like your idea about the priests guiding prayer.

sounds like a good deal to me..but hows it work with a mother and father?..or would the "ideal" genesis family be mother/father/son/daughter?

I'm not sure I understand where you're coming from. A father and a mother pray together for a child. After a certain amount of time after they start praying, (akin to pregnancy period) they're given a kid. Who has dibs on the kid I believe is based on a punnit square between the favor of the mother and the father.

Essentially, a formulative chance for the father or mother to get the child depending on their respective Favor.

Sounds like something you put strawberries in. Mmm, punnets of strawberries.

Ahem, anyway, I'm not sure that's necessarily a good idea. Wouldn't it be better to give it to the person who has least heirs and then the person who has most favour if both are equal? Otherwise some are just not gona get any children.

hmm i really don't have much opinion on this subject, i'll just play it however it turns out. i'm the kind of person who'd prefer having a direct descendant of my character with a few small variations on stats and different looks, instead of a mix of some other random character i have to arbitrarily mate with.

Never said it was the higher favor who had dibs. Cool

I believe it was going to be, the lesser favor had a higher chance of getting the first child. Then, the second child goes to the other parent.

Though we'll probably have 'amount of offspring' be a factor. It would definately suck bearing 5 kids and not getting any of them.

Niff: I think it would be interesting to be given a character editor when the child is born, where your options range from your current character's phenome, to any traits transferrable from the other parent.

So you can have your Dominant "Genetics," but if people want something different they can hit a nice "Random" button. Surprised

ohh yes, that would be nice. why didn't i ever think of suggesting that.. it's like breeding in DQ: M, you synthesise the monsters together and you pick and choose which traits you want it to have of both parents. that would be a very cool system.

would it work in some way where the longer your lineage is the stronger your character is overall, or is it more just about surviving?

Hooray for mutation! Forgot to ask about that. Glad you are suggesting the option, though.

When you breed, you don't lose any/much Favor for incarnating into your children.

If you incarnated into another race, or into a Beast, you'll probably take a hit to Favor. However, especially if you incarnate into an herbivore, you can gain that Favor back very quickly.
